Who we are
We are Annie and Jordan Cumming, Bainbridge Island residents and parents of a first grader at BISD and another child starting kindergarten next year.
Jordan is an engineering manager at a social media tech company. Annie is the owner/physical therapist of White Pine Pelvic Health in Winslow, and co-runs the Tide and Nest postpartum support group with another BISD parent.
We love our schools and our teachers. We are not anti-technology. We have the same questions parents are raising all over the world. The more we talked with people in our school community, the more we heard the same things, again and again. Parents who do not know what technology is used or why. Gaps between device access and instruction on using them effectively and safely. Children and parents describing days with more screen time than expected. Teachers speaking to where technology adds value but also to the serious challenges the distractions create in the learning environment.
We did not set out to start a campaign. We kept hearing the same concerns, so we organized a way for the community to raise them together.
The response has been overwhelming, and it has been clear. Our hope is that what has formed here lasts beyond any single question about classroom technology. That this becomes a community that keeps asking how technology serves our children, and keeps choosing connection over screens, together.
Collectively, we are Bainbridge residents who have asked the district to be transparent and evidence-based about classroom technology.
The community includes current BISD parents across grade levels, parents of children younger than school age who will enter BISD in the coming years, residents without school-age children, and families who are choosing alternative schools in part because of concerns about classroom technology. We include professionals from a range of industries, including education, pediatric medicine, and mental health.
We are signing up because we believe the questions we are raising are reasonable, the concerns are shared across the community, and the conversation is stronger when we show up together.
